frosted cupcakery

Over the weekend, we bought a half dozen cupcakes using a Groupon at Frosted Cupcakery in Long Beach.  I thought I would snap a few pictures before we dug into these beauties.  My favorite was the lemon cupcake with lemon cream cheese frosting.  (From top to bottom: neapolitan {the monthly special}, strawberry with strawberry cream cheese frosting and orange with orange cream cheese frosting.)

s'mores bowl

One night we wanted s'mores for dessert but didn't want to have to handle the ooey gooey mess.  So, we tossed a couple of handmade marshmallows, squares of Hershey's chocolate and Earth's Best Organic Crunchin' Grahams (it's what we had in the pantry) into a little bowl and zapped it in the microwave.  Definitely as tasty (but not as messy) as the handheld version!

avery's second birthday

This year's birthday celebration for Avery was small but still sweet.  She had a fun time, especially with all the balloons (but really, what two-year-old doesn't love balloons?!).  Since her birthday is near Valentine's Day, red and pink served as color inspiration.  We'll see what Avery decides on for next year!

From left to right, top to bottom:

Valentine I love you mix from Papabubble in NY.  Each piece of candy is a work of art.

Cookies from IKEA with a smattering of heart-shaped sprinkles.

White peach marshmallows from our local Blackmarket Bakery.

Coconut meringues from Blackmarket Bakery.

Mother's Circus Animal cookies.  A classic.

Recycled heart-shaped crayon favors.

Blackmarket Bars from Blackmarket Bakery.

Mini Creme Brulee Tarts from Blackmarket Bakery.  Definitely some of their best tarts!

Kettle-cooked jellies from Trader Joe's.  Avery absolutely loves these.

Vanilla and chocolate cupcakes from Susiecakes.  Best cupcakes in town!

A make-your-own-snack mix bar with pink polka dot portion cups from Bake It Pretty.

nutella brownies

This is the easiest recipe for brownies that I have ever seen!  Just 4 ingredients!  The recipe is at Savory Sweet Life (via Under the High Chair).

orange gelatin wedges

This is the first in a series of guest posts by my cousin and guest blogger, Amy Cheng. Welcome, Amy!

A colorful addition to any tea party or meal with children in attendance.  Nobody can say no to JELL-O!

Orange Gelatin Wedges

One 3-ounce package of flavored gelatin

2 oranges

Cut oranges in half from top to bottom (not through their equators).  Using your fingers and a small spoon, remove all the orange pulp, set aside for another use.  Leave all the white pith and make sure no holes appear.  Place the empty shells in muffin tins, for stability.  Make 3-ounce package of flavored gelatin according to package directions, except use 1/4 cup less water.  Fill the orange cups completely to the rim; refriegerate until set.  To serve, remove orange cups from muffin tin.  Slice each lengthwise into two or three crescents.

I would love to try lemons, grapefruits, limes with different flavors for other fun color and flavor combinations. Can you imagine limes with watermelon JELL-O and sesame seeds for little watermelon slices?
