Curious after finding a walnut in her room one morning, little Emilia asks Grandpa to tell her the story behind it. It’s not unlike the little walnut in his pocket that took the journey with him across oceans to a new home, new beginnings and new roots. Emilia learns from Grandpa how to care for and nurture her own seed and they both delight in watching it grow into a sapling. But as Emilia’s plant grows bigger and stronger, Grandpa grows weaker and frailer until one day, Emilia has to say goodbye. This deftly and poignantly written and illustrated tale of family history, intergenerational bonds and the cycle of life is a reminder that even after passing on, loved ones stay with us every day, especially in the traditions they plant in our lives. The story is beautiful, gentle and memorable, just like Grandpa
All from a Walnut was written by Ammi-Joan Paquette, illustrated by Felicita Sala and published by Abrams Books for Young Readers. It’ll be out soon on March 22.
